The next big thing: Meet Sweden’s answer to Leona Lewis

WHO IS SHE?
A 21-year-old singer from Sweden who could be Scandinavia’s answer to Leona Lewis.

WHY THE FUSS?

With her smouldering good looks and powerful, diva-like voice, Agnes won the Swedish Idol talent competition in 2005, but is now hitting the dance scene with a vengeance.
Her summer single, Release Me, was a huge club hit across Europe and reached the Top Three in Britain, setting the tone for her first UK album, out next year.

WHAT’S THE STORY?

Born in the small, lakeside town of Vänersborg, Agnes started singing when she was five, inspired by her mother’s Whitney Houston records.
She also learnt how to play violin, but her big break came with Swedish Idol, which she won when she was 17.
‘It was overwhelming,’ she says of her win. ‘Before the contest, I had only sung on stage once. I was so nervous that my legs were shaking and I couldn’t control my voice.
‘But I learnt to control my nerves and sing in front of millions of people.’

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
The victory landed Agnes a deal with Sony BMG, but she was left frustrated at the lack of artistic control she had over her first two albums, Agnes and Stronger, and left the label last year to sign with independent company Roxy.
Hooking up with writer-producer Anders Hansson, she moved towards the dancefloor, augmenting her soulful vocals with electronic backing.
‘Signing to a big label straight after winning Idol was difficult,’ she says.
‘But things changed once I started on my new album. I wanted to do something different: more disco-orientated songs.’

WHERE CAN I HEAR MORE?
Agnes’ UK debut album, Dance Love Pop, is out in February.
‘People in Sweden are really happy for me. Fans in some countries go crazy when they see a famous person, but Sweden isn’t like that. We don’t have paparazzi, and people have been kind and supportive.’

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton continues to pay tribute to Swedish music. Perez, who previously gave Robyn and Adam Tensta warm recommendations, highlight this time Agnes Carlsson.

- Love, love, love, he writes about Agnes track “Release Me”, which after the success in Sweden also became a hit in particular Britain.

- This song is pure pop perfection, writes Perez, who also posted an audio file of the song.

Agnes Carlsson broke through when she ran for and won, Idol 2005. Placed high on the charts with songs from her last two albums, Stronger and Dance Love Pop. The song “Release Me” is one of England’s most played songs this year and earlier this year Agnes signed a record deal with one of the world’s largest record labels.

Agnes ‘hoping for US single success’

Agnes has revealed that she plans to release her hit ‘Release Me’ in the US next year.
The singer, who rose to fame after winning Swedish Idol in 2005, admitted that she hopes the song will be as successful Stateside as it has been across Europe.
“I’m signed to a record company over there and also in Japan, but we don’t know exactly when it will be released yet,” she told Digital Spy.
“America is such a huge country and it’s a difficult project to take on. We were over there a couple of weeks ago to do my first promotion. On the second day, they told me it was No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Chart, which was incredible.”
The 21-year-old added that she was overwhelmed with the success of the track in the UK, which spent nine weeks in the Top 20.
“I really appreciate people here enjoying my music,” she said. “When I was told how well ‘Release Me’ had done, it didn’t really sink in until I saw the reaction of the people I work with. Also, the Swedish media started calling my management a lot more as a result.”
Agnes is scheduled to release her album Dance Love Pop early next year (UK).
